I used to think I hated change. Then after my surgery, I changed everything just to get away from who I was and how much I hated things in my life. It was good for me to alter everything. It pushed my comfort level further and helped me to deal with uncertainty better. I embraced change like never before.

Change is Constant

Everything changes. All of us are constantly changing, and that is a good thing. We evolve and learn through change. I think my biggest fear isn’t fear of change but things not changing. Sometimes when I am sick, or a situation arises that I don’t care for, I worry that it will be like that forever. Of course, I am always wrong, and it does resolve. Nothing stays the same for very long.

We get sick; we get better. We have friends; we lose friends. We live here, and then we live there. It is all a constantly moving circus, and we are on the rides going round and round, never stopping completely. We might jump off one ride to try out another, but we keep it going.

Does Change Really Exist or Do We Only Change How We Think?

Most of my spiritual awakening and discovery comes not from things happening or changing but me changing how I think about them. Sometimes, I flip something over from bad to good, and amazingly I feel different. Then that situation or thing appears to change. So my thought is maybe, nothing really changes, perhaps only we do and our thoughts about them.

That being said, instead of pushing, resisting and struggling to make something different, maybe change how you are thinking about it. I have found that flipping things over works miracles. I am a thinker, and I think, think, think all day long. Lots of thoughts about everything and usually stuff ends up in one box or the other “good,” or “bad.” I also tend to catastrophize everything. So a little rain instantly becomes a flood. A cold immediately must be cancer. You get the idea.

Make Things Happen Happen Faster, Change Your Thinking

I think when we are unhappy or experiencing something uncomfortable we are impatient for it to go away. So we ruminate on it and scheme up all kinds of solutions, but it stays the same. Our worry and discomfort keep it there in place. We are causing our own pain but can’t often see that. Perhaps we are going about it all wrong. Eventually, it will change, but if we want it to happen faster, maybe just a thought change will hasten its arrival. It’s worth a try.

Meditation Helps With Change

None of this overthinking does me any good. However, meditation has helped me to slow down this type of thinking and at least recognize when I am doing it. Then I have the option of turning it around. So I can use comforting thoughts to remove the fear and worry. Just recognizing the thought is everything. Once I realize I am trying to “force” things, I stop, pause, take a breath and see if I can soften the thought about the situation. When I can, I find it changes overnight. Honestly, things can happen that quick if you let them.

Like with anything, it is all about what you allow into your life. If we let go of control, change the thinking and let it be, often it solves itself quickly with a whisper instead of a bang.
