The line “It just doesn’t matter” is one of my favorites because it puts everything in the proper perspective. It may also be the easiest way to breeze through life and navigate our daily struggles.
It Just Doesn’t Matter, and It Doesn’t
Bill Murray starred in a silly comedy called “Meatballs” when I was a kid. I loved that movie. It was about a summer camp full of rejects and unpopular kids. They had recently lost some competition with a fancier camp, or they were worried about losing it when Bill Murray gave them this great pep talk and finally got everyone chanting, “It just doesn’t matter, it just doesn’t matter, it just doesn’t matter.” All the kids felt better, even me, while watching it.
His point was that in the big picture of life, how important was it to win some silly competition? Not very. The thing is, we can apply this same idea to everything in life. If we step back and remove the drama and significance of seemingly important stuff, it helps ease our suffering when things don’t go well.
How Resistance Plays a Part in Not Getting What You Want
I remember back years ago; I wanted this red convertible. As I applied for the loan, I decided that it just wasn’t that important, so I didn’t care (deep down) if it went through or not, and as it turned out, it did, and I got the car. By not caring either way, I got my beautiful red convertible, but I didn’t put any pressure on myself, and if it fell through, I would have been fine.
Even though we don’t realize it, by worrying about stuff, we actually resist the positive outcome we seek. According to the Law of Attraction (LOA), if you resist something even by telling the Universe you don’t have it yet, you won’t get it. It seems oddly messed up and backward, but that is the way it works.
The bottom line is that the more you can “let go” of the importance of things, the more often they will turn out positively for you. Essentially, when you care less about the outcome, you win.
Recently I had this very same thing work for me with acquiring a new client. I did everything I was supposed to, preparing the quote, speaking with the potential client, and following up. But I never really put that much importance on it. If the client said yes, great, but if they said no, that was okay too. I didn’t care either way. As it turned out, the client signed on with me, and it has been a very positive experience.
The “It Just Doesn’t Matter” Way to Live
Just imagine if everything you did in life, everything you wanted or worked for, really didn’t matter that much to you because you were content as-is.
Don’t get me wrong; it will not be easy to suddenly let it all go and accept everything as it turns out. But maybe we could try incorporating this mantra of “It just doesn’t matter” into our everyday life and ease up on our stranglehold on outcomes. Sometimes the Universe has something better in mind for you, so if you just let it all be, you will most likely be happier in the long run. Eventually, we will all be gone, and did that expensive pair of earrings or that high-paying job really matter? Not in the end, it won’t.
I plan on trying not to hold on so tightly to things I want. That way, I won’t be disappointed, and really in the big picture, does any of it matter that much? I think not!
