You’ve heard the word momentum used with athletes but did you know it’s also the key to life and the laws of the universe? Going in a specific direction with a strong focus keeps you in that place and keeps on delivering the same thing to you. When you are winning and focused, you keep on winning. However, when you are losing and slipping ground, that also keeps going until you switch focus.

Abraham Hicks talks about the power of momentum in just about every one one of their audio clips. Since what you focus on is what you get more of, it works perfectly. However, it works both ways, bad and good.

Down the Rabbit Hole, I Go

About a week and a half ago I got an email, and it spiraled me down the rabbit hole in a very negative direction. I was conscious enough to witness my momentum-building but powerless to stop it. I could feel how it affected me mentally and also physically. With about three days of depression under my belt, I started to see physical ailments pop up all over my body. These issues were a direct result of me building momentum on a subject that I should have walked away from as soon as it started.

Before that day, I had been feeling great physically and mentally, and things were going my way. New and better opportunities kept showing up. So you see, I had developed some great momentum in a positive direction, until that email.

I can see this law of momentum working in other people’s lives too. I hear their words and then see actions and miracles coming to them both positive and negative as they build their case. You wake up it’s cloudy then you don’t want to go to work, and you feel kind of tired, right off you have built a huge pile of negative momentum, and if you keep it going, it will only grow until it is out of control. You see how fast it can happen. That’s why you have to nip it in the bud before it has a chance to take root.

Building Momentum of Doom and Gloom

The tricky part is when someone or something happens, and you feel like you need to respond; even if that response is just internal and you feel the need to “vent” it to someone else. By talking about it, you are building momentum. By thinking about it or obsessing over it, you are building momentum.

No one wants to keep the bad stuff going once it starts but we do it. Over the weekend as I was in my third or fourth day of negativity, I began dropping things like my brand new cell phone, my keys and then accidentally banging into the counter, the bed, the wall. I felt like a walking disaster punishing myself for building more and more momentum in a bad direction. Locking myself in the house until it was over, started sounding pretty good. I had to laugh at all the chaos I created in such a short time.

I have the gift of being able to focus very sharply so my manifestations come quickly and things I think about flow to me. This ability is great when I am thinking about good stuff but very bad when I am focused on the negative spectrum of life.

Slow It Down & Turn it Around

I have been applying some of the Abraham techniques for slowing and stopping the momentum. The one I like the best is taking a nap! It sure does stop the negative flow of messages running through my brain like water. Another good one is to focus on how good something is, like “I feel so comfortable,” or “this blanket is so soft” and things like that.

Noticing when you turn the tide of momentum from positive to negative is the key to slowing the flow and turning it around. I eventually pulled out of it by using meditation and some gratitude practices, but it was a tough one. When you find yourself in positive momentum, keep it going by appreciating every little miracle and good thing that happens. When something negative occurs, let it go immediately. As they say, “drop the rock,” or it will get very heavy quickly.

Momentum is a powerful force in our lives, and we must learn to harness it for our good. We can find ways to slow down or build momentum in the direction we want to create the reality we desire. Like anything, it just takes practice and commitment.
