It is not always easy to see that silver lining even when it is staring you in the face. My spiritual journey has taught me that positive thoughts equal positive results and I know this to be true. However, when you are in pain, suffering, or stressed, it is tough sometimes to see any positive through all the negative.

A Frenzy of Activity

I have been working hard over the past two weeks getting my house ready to sell. It is going on the market this weekend, and we have been cleaning, painting, fixing and carting stuff off to the dump. It has been a flurry of activity for days, and I haven’t had a minute to myself. As expected, my spiritual health is a bit fuzzy because I haven’t had time to meditate and slow down my mind. I experienced a great reminder of this last night.

Two days ago I paid my painter a large sum to paint my basement floor. The paint was needed and made an enormous difference in improving the space. Last night I heard a noise in the basement and went down to find my sump pump was failing. I panicked and called my best friend. He came right over and confirmed that it was failing. We have been having a lot of rain, and the sump pump was running continuously. If it failed, my basement would flood and ruin that floor but also the chances of me selling my house.

My Knight in Shining Armor & Spiritual Reminder

Per his hero nature of saving me, my friend leaped into action. Within minutes, he ran off to his parent’s house to pick up a couple of sump pumps we could use. He called me on the way over to help calm me down.

Meanwhile, I burst into tears and was wallowing in self-pity when he told me that he was so happy. I was confused by his statement since I had gotten him out of bed to come over and work on an awful plumbing job for me. He said “think of all the positives! First, we caught this at just the right time, and it will all be fixed tonight with a temporary solution and then we’ll fix it for good tomorrow.” He went onto to say how lucky we were.

His words comforted me enough to lay down on the couch while he installed the new sump pump and somehow I was able to doze off and get some rest.

Spiritual Guidance There All Along

After he left at midnight, I realized something. He was right; I surely should have been basking in gratitude and looking at the positives instead of the negatives because of how it played out.

Right before going to bed, a bug landed on my TV. It was quite large, so I went to get the fly swatter which is at the top of the basement steps. It was then that I heard the funny noise and went down to inspect it. I was spiritually guided towards a quick solution which saved me from disaster. Once I saw this and believed it to be true, I felt lighter and less burdened, and now I can honestly say, it was all a good thing.

I didn’t enjoy being up until midnight and having to replace something right before selling my house However; I sure am glad I had the opportunity to avoid a real mess by paying attention to the signs right in front of me.

Reach For It, You Will Be Glad You Did

Sometimes we really have to reach to find any good, but it is there for sure. I was drowning in a sea of negative thoughts and expectation of impending doom when my friend pointed out the other side of things. It could have been so much worse, and it wasn’t. Today it is all solved as though it never happened.

So the next time you are in the thick of it, really stressing out over something, hesitate for just a minute and see if you can find even one positive thing to focus on. That could be just the tipping point to start the momentum going in a better direction.
